Rev. Dr Ian H. Thomson has led the work in Dunrossness Baptist since 1990.

Ian's initial training was in Chemistry, graduating B.Sc (Hons) from Glasgow University in 1970. During his final years of that course, he felt the call of God to Baptist ministry, and subsequently trained at the Scottish Baptist College, graduating in 1973 with a post-graduate B.D. (Hons) from London University. His first charge was in Mosspark Baptist Church, Glasgow from 1973 to 1986. During that ministry, he was invited to join the staff of the Baptist College as a part-time lecturer where he taught primarily Early Church History and New Testament Exegesis from the Greek text from 1979 to 1986.  He left Glasgow in 1986, and moved to Shetland (where he had family connections) to study for his Ph.D as a part-time student, again through Glasgow University. His area of expertise was in the Pauline Epistles, and he gained his doctorate in 1991. His thesis was subsequently accepted by Sheffield Academic Press, and was adapted for publication.

Ian sensed a strong call to Dunrossness Baptist Church in 1990. During his pastorate, he has served on a number of church and public bodies, including, among others, the Shetland Baptist Association, the Shetland Churches Council Trust (as Trustee and Chairman for many years) and the Shetland Welfare Trust (serving as a Trustee for a number of years, and Chairman for one year).

Ian is married to Morag. They have one son. He relaxes by walking in the beautiful Shetland countryside when he can, and is a keen DIY-er with many areas of interest. He says, “I just like getting my hands dirty!”
